About Fiumicino Airport
Fiumicino Airport, officially known as Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino
Airport (FCO), is the main airport of Rome, situated in
Fiumicino, at 35 km (22 mi) from the historic city center of
Rome. Having more than 36 million passengers in 2010, it is
the largest airport of Italy. In 2011, in terms of passenger
numbers, it was the 25th busiest airport of the world, and
the sixth in Europe.
Fiumicino airport was opened in 1961 in order to replace the
small Ciampino Airport which remained only with charter and
domestic operations. The airport bares the name of the
famous Leonardo da Vinci. The Italian polymath designed a
flying machine with wings and a proto helicopter. The
airport is public and it is operated by Aeroporti di Roma
SpA. It is a hub for Alitalia and serves other airlines like
Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa, Wizz Air, and
numerous others. The airlines operate on four runways and at
four terminals. To get to Rome’s city center you can take
the Leonardo Express train from the airport’s railway
station, rent a car, take a taxi, or take an airport
shuttle.
